Story: West Coast region

Proposed railways

This map, produced by the Public Works Department in 1886, shows the proposed railway network in the northern part of the South Island. To make the railway lines more attractive, the major coalfields and gold-mining areas are shown. The planners visualised a series of interlinking loops. Less than half the network was ever constructed, and the planned line between the West Coast and Nelson was abandoned.
