Story: King Country region

Jim Bolger

Video file

Jim Bolger is the King Country's best-known politician. He was the National MP for the King Country and Taranaki–King Country electorates from 1972 to 1998 and prime minister from 1990 to 1997. Bolger grew up in Taranaki but moved to the King Country with his wife, Joan, in 1965. The family farmed beef cattle and sheep near Te Kūiti, and Bolger became involved in national politics through his association with farming groups. This 1986 television clip shows Bolger on his farm and describes important influences on him.
