Story: Child abuse

Baby C

The 1987 case of two-year-old girl 'Baby C' was one of the first highly publicised cases of child abuse and death in New Zealand. She died as a result of injuries inflicted by her mother. Both baby and mother had been seen by a range of health and welfare professionals during her short life, and the case forced an examination of the way agencies and professionals responded to abuse. This 1988 news clip highlights some of the issues surrounding the case.
