The 1987 case of two-year-old girl 'Baby C' was one of the first highly publicised cases of child abuse and death in New Zealand. She died as a result of injuries inflicted by her mother. Both baby and mother had been seen by a range of health and welfare professionals during her short life, and the case forced an examination of the way agencies and professionals responded to abuse.
