Story: Gender inequalities

Marching girls, judging men

Marching began in the 1930s, and was a women's sport from the start. This 1949 film clip shows national championships held in particularly bad Wellington weather. Although all the competitors were women, the judges were men – this was standard for women's sports at the time, and would remain so for decades to come.
