Early migrants in Auckland and Wellington could buy familiar foodstuffs such as taro, coconuts, kūmara, green bananas and mangoes. A lot of food also arrived directly from relatives back home. As they spent more time in New Zealand, Cook Islanders began to incorporate more European food in their diet.
