Presenting a gold watch

Presenting a gold watch

Photographed in 1971, O. T. Murphy of Wellington is being presented with a gold watch for 45 years of service to Odlins timber merchants. For most of the 19th century, watches were not universally worn, and to present a gold watch was regarded as a special tribute to an individual. In the 20th century, gold watches were often given to reward long service.
