In New Zealand whaling stopped for economic reasons in 1964. It continued in Albany, Western Australia, where sperm whales were hunted. In this 1975 photograph a sperm whale is being cut up – a process which took only 90 minutes. However, in 1978 a growing conservationist awareness led to the end of whaling in New Zealand and Australia. The two countries became leaders in the international efforts to establish a moratorium on commercial whaling.
