Biography: Kawharu, Ian Hugh

Bernard Fergusson and Hugh Kawharu

Image
Three men look at a sheet of paper one of them is holding up. Fergusson, in the centre, wears a monocle, flanked by two Māori men in suits. The man on the left is unidentified.

Sir Bernard Fergusson (centre) took a special interest in Māori during his term as governor-general (1962–7), and formed a warm friendship with Hugh Kawharu (right). Fergusson later wrote a foreword to Kawharu’s book, Ōrākei: a Ngāti Whātua community (1975).
