Hugh Kawharu became an increasingly important Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei leader. He’s pictured here (left) in September 1965, at an annual commemorative service at the grave of former governor William Hobson in Auckland’s Symonds Street Cemetery. Hobson’s legacy would come under increasing scrutiny in the following decades. With Kawharu are Auckland mayor Sir Dove-Myer Robinson (centre), and Kawharu’s grand-uncle James Te Hikoi Paora (1872–1965).
