Fry (newly hatched salmon) are raised in freshwater hatcheries for 6–12 months. Once they weigh 70–150 grams, they are known as smolt. Smolt are transferred to sea cages or freshwater ponds, where they stay for the rest of their lives. This tanker is transporting live smolt from hatcheries to salmon farms throughout the South Island.
