Story: Te Ara – a history

DNZB publications

DNZB publications

The main print publishing output of the Dictionary of New Zealand biography (DNZB) project were its five English-language volumes, pictured at the back, and the five Māori-language volumes, Ngā tāngata taumata rau, at left. There were also a number of spin-off books which presented DNZB biographies, usually with images and an introductory essay. Seen here are The suffragists, published in 1993 for the centenary of women's suffrage; The turbulent years, which included the Māori biographies in English from the 1870–1900 volume; Māpihi Kahurangi, a selection of 12 Māori-language biographies of Māori from the 1769–1869 volume; The people of many peaks, all the Māori biographies from that volume in English; and A people's history, which avoided the high and the mighty and presented 130 lives of ordinary people from the 1769–1869 volume. Not pictured is Te Kīngitanga: The people of the Māori King movement
