This archaeological dig was carried out as a training exercise at Pakotere in the Bay of Plenty. The dig was organised by Jack Golson as part of the 1959 New Zealand Archaeological Association (NZAA) conference. The NZAA enabled archaeologists to get together, exchange information and learn new skills. From 1958 the NZAA ran New Zealand's site recording scheme, systematically recording the details of archaeological sites.
