Rip It Up began in 1977 as a New Zealand version of British music magazines like New Musical Express (NME). It was originally free, but rising costs led to the introduction of a cover price. The magazine was a strong supporter and promoter of New Zealand popular and alternative music, and was influential in the boom in New Zealand music from the 1980s. The cover of the April/May 2013 issue featured the Hutt Valley heavy metal band Beastwars. Rip It Up ceased publication in 2015.
