Freed was an Auckland University student initiative that sought to break away from the nationalist bent of New Zealand literary culture and strike out in new directions. It featured experimental poetry from the likes of Alan Brunton and David Mitchell. This 1969 cover drawing by artist Pat Hanly shows figures seated as if on a motorcycle – a symbol of freedom in the 1960s.
