New Zealand-born writer Katherine Mansfield was photographed in 1920 by her companion Ida Baker at the Villa Isola Bella at Menton in the south of France. Then very ill with tuberculosis, Mansfield was forced to spend winters abroad rather than in London (where she was based from 1908), but it was a productive time. In the next few years she wrote some of her best-known stories about New Zealand, and fantasised about a return to the birthplace she had once been so desperate to leave.
