Boxes containing the kōiwi (skeletal remains) of 35 Māori are carried into Rongomaraeroa, the marae at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in 2009. The kōiwi were likely to include toi moko (tattooed heads), which had been returned from overseas museums. Te Papa manages the Karanga Aotearoa Repatriation Programme for the New Zealand government. In 2014 Te Papa held about 200 toi moko and kōiwi which it was trying to identify, with the ultimate goal of returning them to their iwi of origin.
