Apirana Ngata, of Ngāti Porou, and his friend the anthropologist Peter Buck (Te Rangi Hīroa) of Ngāti Mutunga, are shown here with an unfinished tukutuku panel. They are pictured at Ngata's home at Waiōmatatini, in the Waiapu River valley, during a Dominion Museum anthropological expedition in 1923. The photograph was taken by museum artist and photographer James Ingram McDonald.
