Story: Māori and museums – ngā whare taonga

Carver Thomas Heberley, of Te Āti Awa, shows a party of schoolgirls around his Dominion Museum workshop in the 'tin shed' at Sydney Street, Wellington. Heberley, who was the museum's first Māori full-time employee, worked repairing and reconstructing Māori artefacts. He also brought in groups of carvers, painters and weavers to assist him. Visitors to the shed were encouraged and the site became very popular with the Wellington public.
