Three of the nine members of the inaugural class of the National School of Ballet are shown here, with teacher Dorothy Daniels at right. Daniels, one of New Zealand's best-known ballet teachers, and fellow teacher Jean Horne were responsible for getting the school off the ground, with the support of the Department of Internal Affairs (then the administrator of government arts programmes) and the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council.
