By comparison with the 1940 centennial, the 1990 sesquicentennial (New Zealand's 150th anniversary) saw few historical re-enactments and little praise of the pioneers. One of the few historical re-creations was at Petone Beach on 22 January 1990, when modern 'New Zealand Company' colonists rowed to shore and disembarked onto the beach to be met by local Māori. It was exactly 150 years after the first colonists had arrived.
