Local residents collect wood for a bonfire which was held on the night of 23 June 1897 as part of Auckland's celebrations marking Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. There were also bonfires on Mount Hobson, Mount Albert, Mount Victoria and Mount Eden. The lighting of bonfires was an empire-wide ritual which was also used to mark the anniversary in the United Kingdom.
