Ngāti Porou made a major contribution to the 28th New Zealand (Māori) Battalion which fought with great distinction in the Second World War. The only Victoria Cross won in the battalion was posthumously awarded to 2nd Lieutenant Te Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu at a gathering in Ruatōria in October 1943. Over 1,000 school students attended the hui, which was photographed by John Pascoe.
