Story: Art galleries and collections

Auckland Society of Arts gallery, 1905

Auckland Society of Arts gallery, 1905

The Auckland Society of Arts was founded in 1869, the first art society in New Zealand. This 1905 photograph of the society's gallery shows the hanging conventions prevalent at the time: closely grouped rows of paintings hung, in many cases, from picture rails. The chairs stand in regimented lines awaiting a horde of art lovers.
