New Zealand Opera Company: Porgy and Bess

A photograph of the dress rehearsal for the New Zealand Opera Company's 1965 production of Porgy and Bess shows internationally famous bass Īnia Te Wīata (kneeling, second from right) as Porgy. The production included many Māori singers in the cast, and was a huge success when it toured New Zealand (though the Australian tour, like many a New Zealand venture into Australia, was financially crippling).
