The control points are not hidden – a map given to each participant shows the trails, with the control points numbered. The points must be visited in order, but the route taken is up to each competitor. The person who gets to all control points fastest is the winner. Ski orienteering (or ski-o) courses generally take one or two hours. The Cardrona event, held every year, is organised by the Dunedin Orienteering Club.
