Sports day, around 1910

Boys line up for a handicapped running race during a sports day at Gladys Sommerville's school in Wellington, about 1910. Schools held annual sports days each summer. Students competed in a range of athletic events, including running, skipping, jumping and sack races. Most children looked forward to the day, not least because it was a day out of stuffy classrooms.
