Story: Ngāpuhi

Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands

After a period of consolidation around the Hokianga Harbour, the Ngāpuhi tribe expanded east into the Bay of Islands. Through conquest and intermarriage, kin groups throughout the area became identified as Ngāpuhi. Eventually Ngāpuhi also expanded south towards Whāngārei. This photo shows Russell in the Bay of Islands.
