Story: Children’s play

Doreen Gifford plays with her doll and pram. In the 19th and early 20th century Pākehā girls were often encouraged to play quieter, more demure games, fitting the stereotype of 'ladylike' behaviour. Many colonial families could not afford to buy expensive manufactured toys. However, Doreen's father, Algernon Charles Gifford, the science master at Wellington College, was able to buy her an elaborate toy pram and dolls.
