Sprint-car racing, 1999

This five-car pileup was an early feature of the sprint-car event held at Te Marua Speedway, Upper Hutt, in 1999. Sprint cars race on dirt tracks and, despite their small size, are often powered by methanol-fuelled V8 engines. These are winged sprint cars – fitted with aerodynamic aluminium panels to improve handling.
