Doreen Lumley (right) was one of the top New Zealand women sprinters in the 1930s. Here she is on her way to equalling the 100 yards world record at Carlaw Park in Auckland in 1939. Third from left (in white) is Decima Norman, an Australian champion who had won the gold medal at the Empire Games in Sydney the year before. She could not beat Lumley this time. Tragically, a few months after this race Lumley was killed in a car crash along with her twin sister and fellow athlete Bernice.
