Marae trustees, 2000

Three of the trustees of Ongaroto marae, near Ātiamuri in south Waikato, are outside their wharenui (meeting house), Whaita. From left are Hare Haika, Juda (Koti) Te Hiko and Ranui (Ginger) Hitiri Kapua. Among the responsibilities of this marae's trustees is kaitiakitanga (guardianship) of nearby Pōhaturoa Hill, a historic dwelling place of the Ngāti Whaita people.
