Rained-out campers, Waikanae, 2008

Inclement weather is an unfortunate but common feature of camping in New Zealand. Torrential rain struck the lower North Island in January 2008, flooding campgrounds, closing roads and ruining holiday plans. Wellingtonians John and Cushla Dorey had taken their family to the El Rancho Christian Holiday Park in Waikanae, but packed up their new tent and headed home a day earlier than planned. Damp but still smiling are (left to right) Hannah Dorey, William Donnelly, Ally Donnelly, Ciaran Dorey, James Donnelly, Emma Dorey and Tom Donnelly.
