Punters place bets on the Melbourne Cup in the Brandon Street TAB, Wellington, in 2011. With $6.7 million bet on the race that year, it is easily the most popular betting event for New Zealanders. The Melbourne Cup is the world's richest handicap race and in recent years has attracted an increasing number of northern-hemisphere horses. The 2011 winner, Dunaden, was from France, as was the previous year's winner, Americain. In earlier times New Zealand horses were prominent, but fewer now gain entry to the field in the face of stronger competition.
