These boys at Wellington's Clyde Quay school have made or adapted sticks in order to try playing hockey in 1955. From 2011 Hockey New Zealand ran the Small Sticks programme to attract children aged four to 13 to play the game with the correct equipment. Hockey New Zealand has also formed a youth council, with eight primary and high school representatives, to liaise between schools and the national association.
