Wrestling on board the Ruapehu, 1917 (1st of 4)

Wrestling on board the Ruapehu, 1917

An avid audience watches a wrestling match on the Ruapehu, a troop ship taking New Zealanders of the 23rd Reinforcements to England in 1917, during the First World War. Sports competitions were often organised on board ships to keep the troops entertained during the long voyages to Europe or the Middle East. The sports were usually events such as boxing or wrestling, which required minimal space.
