These Japanese squid boats are moored in Wellington Harbour in 1978. They were about to set off for five to six months of fishing off the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. New Zealand and Japan had disputes over the extension of New Zealand's fisheries controls to 12 nautical miles (22 kilometres) off the coast in 1964 and to 200 nautical miles (370 kilometres) in 1977. Both disputes were settled under international law.
