Antarctic Minerals Convention, 1982

Chris Beeby chairing the second round of talks on an Antarctic Minerals Convention.

New Zealander Chris Beeby, seated centre, chairs the second round of talks on an Antarctic Minerals Convention, in 1982. A draft convention on minerals was agreed to in 1988, but never adopted due to a lack of support from France and Australia. Beeby, a diplomat and international lawyer, was chair of the Special Consultative Committee on Antarctic Minerals from 1982 to 1988. He also served as counsel for New Zealand in the nuclear tests case at the International Court of Justice (1973–74) and as New Zealand's agent in arbitration over the sinking of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior, which was bombed in Auckland by French agents (1989–90). Beeby was a member of the World Trade Organization Appellate Body and was elected as its chairman in 1998.
