The container ship Rena became stuck after running aground on the Astrolabe Reef off the coast of Tauranga, on 5 October 2011. The Rena, which was owned by a Greek company and registered in Liberia, had to be abandoned. The nearby coast suffered from oil pollution, while containers and freight from the vessel also washed ashore. The incident raised a number of issues of international law, including liability for pollution and the operation of laws of salvage.
