Members of New Zealand's Olympic team practise the haka at Los Angeles 1932. The haka had by this time been adopted by a number of New Zealand national teams. Of the 21 New Zealand athletes who went to Los Angeles, 11 were rowers. Two of the rowing team, Jack MacDonald and Laurie 'Jumbo' Jackson, were both Marlborough-based members of the Rangitane iwi. They were claimed to be the first Māori Olympic athletes.
