First Māori MPs: Mete Kīngi

Takarangi Mete Kīngi represented the Western Māori electorate from 1868 to 1870. He had earlier supported British and government troops during the New Zealand wars. After leaving Parliament he succeeded his father as the paramount chief of the Whanganui tribes.
