Story: Kermadec Islands

Aerial view of Raoul Island (1st of 2)

Aerial view of Raoul Island

This aerial view of Raoul Island was taken in March 1992, looking south over the Raoul caldera. The darker area of water is Blue Lake, and the pale green lake is Green Lake, site of an active vent that last erupted in 2006.

Denham Bay (upper right) marks the edge of a collapse caldera. During eruptions in 1815 and 1870 a volcanic island appeared in the middle of the bay.
