Mysore thorn was introduced to the Kermadec Islands in the 19th century to keep goats out of Thomas Bell’s vegetable gardens in Denham Bay, but has spread aggressively to cover large areas. Volunteers and Department of Conservation workers hack paths through the dense, prickly undergrowth, and then spray it with poison. It is a persistent pest, and continuing work is needed to keep it under control.
