Soon after daybreak on 29 April 1864 Lieutenant General Duncan Cameron ordered an artillery bombardment on Pukehinahina (Gate Pā), which had been built by the Ngāi Te Rangi chief Rāwiri Tuaia Puhirake. It was the beginning of the assault on the pā. In this photograph taken at sunrise on that day, Cameron is fifth from right, leaning on the gun carriage.
