Soon after daybreak on 29 April 1864, Lieutenant-General Duncan Cameron ordered an artillery bombardment of Pukehinahina (Gate Pā), which had been built by Rāwiri Tuaia Puhirake, a rangatira of Ngāi Te Rangi. It was the beginning of the assault on the pā. In this photograph taken at sunrise on that day, Cameron is fifth from right, standing in front of the wheel of the gun carriage.
