During his long parliamentary career Northern Māori MP Hōne Heke Ngāpua (Ngāpuhi) called repeatedly for greater recognition of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. Here Ngāpua stands fourth from the left in the front row at a hui at Waitangi in 1899. He is with Premier Richard Seddon, Governor Lord Ranfurly, fellow MP James Carroll and other dignitaries. Seated in front are veterans of the Northern War of 1845, in which anti-government Ngāpuhi were led by Ngāpua's forebear Hōne Heke Pōkai.
