Teacher Julie Stanton (left) plays with special school students Sam Coffey and Brianna Townend in a purpose-built playground at the Wilson School in Auckland. The playground has seven spaces, separated by gates, where the students, all of whom have physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities, can enjoy supervised play. Among its features are rectangular basins with water, trees and grassed areas. Despite the introduction of mainstreaming, there are still a number of state-run special schools in New Zealand.
