A good turnout of candidates didn’t guarantee local interest at this 1996 meeting in Wellington. The nine candidates seeking election in the Rongotai electorate represented parties ranging from National to Natural Law (a party promoting transcendental meditation). They faced rows of empty seats. Rongotai’s history as a safe Labour seat may have influenced attendance.
