Story: King Country region

Michael Mattar

Michael Mattar

Michael Mattar was a fashion designer and dressmaker who lived and worked in Taumarunui his whole life. He opened Michael Mattar Haute Couture in the town's main centre in 1963 and became nationally famous when he won the supreme award at the New Zealand Fashion Showcase in 1968. Women from throughout the country came to his shop to buy clothing and to have dresses made, as did some international visitors. This is Mattar outside his shop in 2002. He died in 2004.
