Michael Mattar

Michael Mattar was a fashion designer and dressmaker who lived and worked in Taumarunui throughout his life. He opened Michael Mattar Haute Couture in the town's main centre in 1963 and became nationally famous when he won the supreme award at the New Zealand Fashion Showcase in 1968. Women from around the country and overseas came to his shop to buy clothing and have dresses made. Here Mattar stands outside his shop in 2002. He died in 2004.
