Corporal Willie Apiata, of the New Zealand Special Air Service (SAS), received the Victoria Cross in 2007 for bravery under fire while serving in Afghanistan. In 2004 Apiata had rescued a wounded comrade during a night attack on his patrol. The SAS had a troop stationed in the Kabul area, where it acted as a training and support unit alongside the Afghan National Police Crisis Response Unit.
