Pioneer Battalion performing a haka

Pioneer Battalion performing a haka

By 30 June 1918, when this photograph was taken, the Māori (Pioneer) Battalion had become an all-Māori unit. Here, members of the battalion perform a haka for Prime Minister William Massey and Joseph Ward, Liberal Party leader and deputy prime minister. The two politicians made three trips to Europe during and immediately after the war, and while they were there they visited the troops on the Western Front.
