Rosemary Banks, New Zealand permanent representative to the UN, is congratulated after New Zealand was elected to the Economic and Social Council as a representative of the Western European and Others Group (WEOG). New Zealand's membership of the group reflects its colonial past and its relationship with Britain rather than its Pacific location. New Zealand was not the only country to find its UN grouping uncomfortable. Nauru argued that the Pacific Island countries were 'drowning' in the Asian Group, and Australia and New Zealand were 'marooned' in WEOG. It suggested bringing these countries together into an alternative Oceania grouping.
